MASAKA- Democratic Party parliamentary candidates have swept most constituencies in Masaka District except Bukoto Central and Bukoto Central.
According to the results from the Thursday general elections, the party retained Masaka Municipality seat and Bukoto East parliamentary seat with where Mr Matthias Mpuuga and Ms Florence Namayanja respectively, won.
While declaring results on Friday evening, Masaka District Returning Officer Nathan Nabasa, said Mr Mpuuga scored 17,319, while his rival; NRM’s Herman Ssentongo gathered 14,586 votes.
In Bukoto East, Ms Namayanja beat NRM’s Abdullah Nkoyoyo. Ms Namayanja gathered 16,168 votes. Mr Nkoyoyo got 15,775 votes, while independent candidate Kizito Nsubuga got 506 votes.
Ms Justine Nameere and Mr Moses Nsamba, all independents scored 134 and 89 votes respectively.
The party also snatched the Masaka District Woman MP seat from NRM’s Freda Kasse Mubanda . Ms Mubanda lost to DP’s Mary Babirye Kabanda, an educationist and former member of Buganda Lukiiko.
However, Vice President Edward Ssekandi retained his Bukoto Central seat after defeating DP’s Joseph Batemyeto. Mr Ssekandi polled 12,000 votes, while Mr Batemyetto garnered 6,679 votes.
The party also suffered a loss in Bukoto South where the party Secretary General Mathias Nsubuga lost to NRM’s Muhammad Mbabaali who scored 14,410 votes against Nsubuga’s 6,296 votes.
Forum for Democratic Change’s Richard Muyomba got 935 votes while Raymond Ssebugwawo of Go Forward polled 135 votes.
DP also retained Bukomansimbi South constituency, in Bukomansimbi District and the district woman MP seat with Mr Deogratius Kiyingi returning to parliament and Ms Veronica Nanyondo, a sister to the late MP Suzan Namaganda winning.
The late Namaganda, who died in a motor accident, last year, was the district woman MP. DP's Joseph Ssewungu also retained the Kalungu East constituency after trouncing three others in the race, with 13,376 votes.
Historically, Masaka District is known to be a DP’s stronghold due to the fact that one of its founders Benedict Kiwanuka is a son of the soil.
